Getting more from your $ with Woolworths Rewards

Many areas I cover can be done in slow time leading up to your first tax assessment, but you will need groceries and phone contracts immediately. Grab an Airalo E-Sim for your journey over and first few days.

There is a cost-of-living crisis. Prices have exceeded ADF increases by a large margin in recent years but fear not.

If you compare a can of coke at Woolworths vs the imitation coke at Aldi you might think the thing that tastes a bit like cola is cheaper.  But apply Woolworths discounts and rewards then having real coke is the cost effective option.

Woolworths group is like Tesco’s, but better, there are dozens of their shops and associated stores in every town. They cover everything from groceries, alcohol to travel insurance and offer the best rewards scheme you will ever come across

Woolworths Rewards: On arrival use this to get every person over 18 in your household their own rewards card/account with the Rewards Extra program. These links will get you a free month, then its $70 a year (per person). Your card will give you a unique barcode/ account number.

Without paying for Rewards Extra, every time you shop and scan your barcode at any Woolworths group shop you will get one reward point (or $0.005) per $1 you spend.  You can use them as follows:

  • Get $10 of your next shop for every 2000 points you collect
  • Convert them into air miles

But I want you to get more value. Upgrading to Rewards Extra gives you so much more:

  • Minimum of 2 x points ($0.01) for every $1 you spend
  • Personalised promotions and points booster on your regularly purchased items such as:
  1. Buy brown bread and get 30 extra points
  2. This weekend get 5 x points if your shop is over $300
  3. Buy 2 cases of XXXX lager at BWS for a bonus 1000 points
  • 10% of a shop every month up to $500 (max $50 off)
  • Free products

Paying $70 per annum, per person will save 10 times that on your purchases, free items by growing points faster.

An amazing hack you can pull off with Rewards Extra is, if you are shopping with your partner (or have their phone) is to do a larger shop early in the month of all the non-perishables you will need. Scan your code and tell the checkout assistant to stop once the bill reaches $500. (They are ok with this, they won’t say you can’t) They will take 10% off the bill, you will only pay $450 and have 2000+ points with your boosted app offers or $10 banked for December.

Now you scan your partners rewards barcode and put the rest of your shopping through. You will get 10% or $50 off that bill and more double points accrued towards Christmas. If you have age 18+ dependants helping you shop (or their phones) and your bill is going to be over $1000, use theirs too.

Or repeat the trick next week with theirs.

But…. Why just get one 10% off per person per month?

Woolworths will also give you an extra 10% off a shop per month if you have a mobile.everyday plan with them! They are basically Telstra (the best network in Australia) contracts called something else and sold by Woolworths. (you need Rewards Extra 1st to link it!)

Take out a plan (each), sort out the mobile app (each) and link it to your individual rewards cards for a second 10% off a shop (each), every month.

The discounts on grocery shopping you each get from the second 10% will cover 100% of your mobile.everyday costs. (which is also tax deductable if used mostly for work)

For an extra 4000 Everyday Rewards points ($20 off a future shop). Use the unique code F7AC6A once you’ve activated.

But…. Why just get two 10% off per person per month?

If you take out insurance with Woolworths you will get another 10% off per month. (you need Rewards Extra 1st to link it!)

But now you need to get creative if married/de-facto or have 18+ dependants to get one each:

  • One of you gets the car insurance as main driver
  • One of you gets the contents, travel or pet insurance policy
  • If any of your kids drive, they take their own cover

Note: Woolworths insurance isn’t always the cheapest policy available in a comparison search.  But it could be with $600 of discounts factored in. Make sure the policy suits your needs and excess tolerance prior to factoring in discounts . Once you have maximised 3 x 10% offers (each) then other insurance providers may be more cost effective for other insurance needs.

Overall, you can save $1800 per person over 18 in your household a year. Build up over $1000 to use in December or come off shopping throughout the year.

Those savings could go a long way towards holidays!

But…. Why pay 100% of the bill after each 10% off?
